Protecting children's privacy
Magic Pen Pals is fully compliant with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Here's exactly how we meet and exceed every requirement.
What is COPPA?
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a U.S. federal law that imposes requirements on websites and online services that collect personal information from children under 13. It requires parental consent, limits data collection, and gives parents control over their children's information.
Verifiable Parental Consent
We obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting any personal information from children under 13. Parents must create an account and explicitly approve their child's participation.
Minimal Data Collection
We collect only the minimum information necessary to provide our service: the child's first name, age, and interests. We never collect more than what is needed for letter personalization.
No Third-Party Sharing
We never sell, rent, or share children's personal information with third parties for marketing purposes. Data is shared only with service providers essential to delivering letters.
Parental Access & Control
Parents can review, modify, or delete all personal information collected about their child at any time through the parent dashboard or by contacting us directly.
No Behavioral Advertising
We do not serve behavioral advertising to children. No child data is used for ad targeting, profiling, or any purpose beyond personalizing their pen pal letters.
Data Security
All children's data is protected with enterprise-grade encryption, stored on secure U.S.-based servers, and accessible only to authorized personnel who have undergone background checks.
Data Retention & Deletion
We retain children's data only as long as the subscription is active. Upon cancellation or parental request, all child data is permanently deleted within 30 days.
Regular Compliance Audits
We conduct annual third-party audits to verify our COPPA compliance. Our privacy practices are reviewed and updated to meet evolving regulatory standards.
